Playa Avellanas

"surfer in break-aerial view"

Playa Avellanas is a beautiful small beach town located in the province of Guanacaste on the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The town is known for its stunning natural beauty, laid-back atmosphere, and world-class surf breaks. The main beach, Playa Avellanas, is a long stretch of white sand that is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. The waves at Avellanas are consistently good throughout the year, making it a popular destination for surfers from all over the world.

Avellanas is also home to a variety of wildlife, including howler monkeys, iguanas, and a wide range of bird species. The town is surrounded by lush tropical forests. There is also a famous wooden bridge that crosses a dried mangrove in Playa Avellanas where tourists love to take pictures.

Despite its popularity among tourists, Avellanas has managed to maintain its laid-back, “local” vibe. There are some beachfront restaurants and bars where visitors can enjoy fresh seafood and cold drinks while taking in the stunning ocean views. The town is also home to a small but thriving community of artists, surfers, and expats who have chosen to make the small town of Avellanas their home.

Stay:
Since Avellanas is still a relatively small town there are little options for accommodation, but you can still find a couple of small hostels, cabins, and some airbnbs. A number of people go to Avellanas as a day trip from surrounding beach towns in the region.

How to get there:
The best way to get to Avellanas is driving, but if renting a car is not an option you can travel in taxi from nearby beach towns. The best option to reach Avellanas is from Tamarindo, which is only a 30 minute drive keeping the cost of the taxi in the low range. There are plenty of ways to get to Tamarindo if you’r coming from San Jose. Visit our page on Tamarindo for more information on how to get to the town. As a tip, visit both Tamarindo and Avellanas for a full surfing experience and maybe add another beach to the trip like nearby Playa Grande.
